How the Complex Wave is Generated
A complex periodic waveform can be produced by adding sinusoidal
components having frequencies that are integer multiples of the
fundamental frequency.
The general form is:
v(t) = A₁sin(ωt) + A₂sin(2ωt) + A₃sin(3ωt) + … + Aₙsin(nωt)
For example, when the 3rd harmonic is added:
v(t) = A₁sin(ωt) + A₃sin(3ωt)
When more harmonics are added, additional terms appear in the equation and the oscilloscope waveform becomes increasingly complex.
