⚡ Voltage Build-Up of a Shunt Generator
Interactive demonstration of residual magnetism → field excitation → rising terminal voltage
Generator & Magnetic Field
Terminal Voltage
0 V
0% of final voltage
Ready: Start the generator to observe voltage build-up.
Build-Up Sequence
- Residual magnetism produces a small initial EMF.
- The initial EMF drives current through the shunt field winding.
- Field current strengthens the magnetic flux.
- Increasing flux produces a larger generated EMF.
- The process continues until the operating point is reached.
Voltage Build-Up Curve
Important concept: A self-excited shunt generator requires
sufficient residual magnetism and an appropriate field resistance. If residual
magnetism is absent, the field winding is incorrectly connected, the field
resistance is too high, or the generator speed is too low, voltage may fail
to build up.
