In a delta (Δ) connected three-phase alternator, the three phase windings are connected end-to-end to form a closed triangular circuit, and each winding is directly connected between two line conductors. Therefore, the line voltage is equal to the phase voltage, expressed as . Unlike a star-connected alternator, there is no multiplication between phase and line voltage in a balanced delta connection. Thus, if each phase winding generates 230 V, the voltage measured between any two line terminals is also 230 V.
Line Voltage of a Delta (Δ) Connected Alternator
Interactive demonstration: in a balanced delta connection,
the line voltage is equal to the phase voltage.
Simulation Controls
1. Delta-Connected Alternator
The three phase windings are connected end-to-end.
Each winding is directly connected between two line terminals.
Therefore:
VL = Vph
2. Voltage Measurement
Phase A-B
230 V
Phase B-C
230 V
Phase C-A
230 V
For a balanced Delta connection:
VAB = Vph
VBC = Vph
VCA = Vph
Therefore: VL = Vph
VAB = Vph
VBC = Vph
VCA = Vph
Therefore: VL = Vph
3. Three-Phase Voltage Vector Diagram
The three phase voltages have equal magnitude and are separated
by 120° electrical.
VAB = Vph VBC = Vph VCA = Vph
VAB = Vph VBC = Vph VCA = Vph
